Golf holidays in the Algarve – a paradise for golfers on Europe’s sunny south-west coast
The Algarve is not only Portugal’s most popular holiday region, but is also considered by golfers worldwide to be one of the best golf destinations in Europe – and rightly so. Once you’ve played here, you’ll come back. Why? It’s simple: over 30 varied golf courses, spectacular coastal landscapes, a mild climate all year round – and a relaxed, slow-paced and inspiring lifestyle.
Golf in the Algarve – perfect conditions all year round
What makes the Algarve so special for a golf holiday is the combination of nature, climate and course design. Summers are warm but always pleasant thanks to the Atlantic Ocean, and winters are mild – with over 300 days of sunshine a year, the Algarve is a year-round destination for golfers. The months from October to May are particularly ideal: the fairways are quiet, the courses are well maintained and the weather is perfect for golf.
Pure diversity: golf courses in the Algarve
Whether you prefer to tee off with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, play through rolling pine forests or enjoy strategically placed bunkers and water hazards, the Algarve offers the right challenge for every handicap and playing style. Some of the most famous courses:
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club: One of the best golf courses in Europe, a signature design by Jack Nicklaus – an absolute must for ambitious golfers.
Quinta do Lago (South, North & Laranjal): Three top courses in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The South Course has hosted the Portuguese Open several times.
Dom Pedro Victoria, Old & Pinhal: The golf region around Vilamoura is famous for its density and quality of courses. The Victoria Course is known for the Portugal Masters of the DP World Tour.
Vale do Lobo (Royal & Ocean): The iconic 16th tee over the cliffs is one of the most photographed golf motifs in Europe.
Golf holidays in style – excellent hotels and resorts
The Algarve offers a wide selection of golf hotels and resorts – from charming boutique hotels to luxurious 5-star golf resorts with direct access to the course. Many facilities offer their own practice areas, golf academies and shuttle services to the surrounding courses. Particularly popular with golfers:
Conrad Algarve
Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort
Penina Hotel & Golf Resort
Tivoli Carvoeiro
Vila Vita Parc
More than just golf – experience the Algarve
Between rounds, the Algarve has a lot to offer: picturesque coastal towns such as Lagos and Tavira, first-class restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood, beautiful beaches, impressive rock formations and an exciting hinterland with wine, olive oil and culture. Perfect for golfers who want to combine their holiday with enjoyment and discovery.
Conclusion – why golf in the Algarve?
For golfers looking for variety, quality and a year-round playing climate, the Algarve is an absolute dream destination. Santo Antonio Golf Club

Santo António Golf is a natural, hilly parkland-style golf course located in the western Algarve, near Budens and not far from Sagres. Designed by Pepe Gancedo, it is widely known for being carved directly into the existing landscape, with minimal earthmoving, which gives it a very organic and rugged feel compared to more manicured resort courses in the region.
The course features strong elevation changes, rolling fairways, and many uneven lies, meaning players rarely face flat shots. It includes a mix of blind tee shots, elevated greens, strategic bunkering, and occasional ravines or natural obstacles, all of which demand accuracy and good course management rather than pure distance. The layout is considered visually scenic, with views over the Algarve countryside and distant Atlantic areas in some parts.
Overall, Santo António Golf is regarded as a challenging, character-filled championship course that rewards creativity and adaptability. It is less about easy resort play and more about shot-making in a natural, sometimes demanding terrain, making it memorable but also physically and technically testing.
