Situated in the centre of Costa Rica at about 1,100 metres above sea level, in the so-called “Meseta Central” of the central valley, San Jose is the largest city in the country with about 340,000 inhabitants. The city is surrounded by a volcanic mountain range in the north and a non-volcanic mountain range in the south making excursions to volcanoes, national parks, rivers and waterfalls very interesting due to its proximity. The main attractions in the historic centre include the iconic National Theatre, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Casa de la Cultura, but the capital also boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere, a lively nightlife, plus shopping and luxury hotels especially in the neighbourhoods of Escazu and Asuncion. With its international airport, San Jose is an ideal departure point for many of the country’s tourist attractions and golf courses. In addition, its mild climate makes it ideal for year-round golfing, although the best time to visit San Jose is from December to April, during the dry season.
