Sicily (/ ˈsɪsᵻli / siss-i-lee; Italian: Sicilia [siˈtʃiːlja], Sicily: Sicily) is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily was given special status as an autonomous region after the Italian constitutional referendum of 1946.
