This is a club which originates from the passion of the owners for their land. The Melpignano family, indeed, loving Puglia and in particular their “own” stretch of coast which runs from Bari to Brindisi, in the mid-Nineties started to turn the land it owned into tourist destinations. First they built a luxury hotel, Masseria San Domenico. Later, on the virtually unfarmed lands towards the sea, between Savelletri and the ancient walls of the Mycenaean town of Egnathia, the golf course was opened to the public (at the end of 2002), enabling also the preservation of the area from possible building developments, which could have spoiled its beauty.The tourist-oriented project of San Domenico has always successfully promoted the “pay and play” system, thanks to the irresistible charm of the area: natural beauties, cultural wealth and culinary diversity make it a unique destination. The 18 holes, designed by European Golf Design, are rather flat and among the most spectacular in the Country: it is perhaps the only course in Italy where you can see the sea from every hole. The most difficult is the 14th, a 430 m par 4, a fairly long one, with central located bunkers which divide the fairway and some mounds by the green. The most magnificent is the 3rd hole, a 205 m par 3 running towards the sea, with a green raised and well guarded by bunkers, where the wind is almost always blowing. Very few water hazards: one single lake between the 1st hole and the green of the 5th. The breeze, blowing almost constantly all year round, can be quite tricky and affect the game. Distinctive features: many water hazards, gentle rolling hills. The sea breeze is particularly pleasant in summer but can be quite tricky even for the expert golfer. The course was designed in compliance with USGA’s standard rules and regulations. Very few water hazards, but sweeping fairways and large welcoming greens make play very enjoyable. The true obstacle on most days is represented by the wind which often blows intensely. The holes closest to the sea are aesthetically extraordinary, with the 16th, a par 5, which will seem endless if you are playing against the wind.
