Die Pyrenäen sind ein Gebirgszug zwischen Spanien und Frankreich. Mit einer Höhe von 3.404 Metern (11.168 Fuß) am Gipfel des Aneto erstrecken sie sich über etwa 491 km (305 Meilen) von ihrer Verbindung mit den Kantabrischen Bergen bis zum Mittelmeer (Cap de Creus). Zum größten Teil bildet der Hauptkamm eine Grenze zwischen Spanien und Frankreich, wobei der Kleinstaat Andorra dazwischen liegt. Die jährliche Schneefallgrenze variiert in verschiedenen Teilen der Pyrenäen zwischen etwa 2.700 und 2.800 Metern (8.900 bis 9.200 Fuß). Im Durchschnitt wird der saisonale Schnee mindestens 50 % der Zeit über 1.600 Metern (5.200 Fuß) zwischen Dezember und April beobachtet.
