Golf holidays in Cuba – Caribbean lifestyle meets golfing experience
Cuba is (still) an insider tip for golfers – but one that has a lot to offer. Between colonial flair, vintage cars, cigars and tropical beaches, golfers will discover a small, exquisite golf destination with plenty of charm and potential. If you want to combine your golf holiday with Cuban joie de vivre, a dash of rum and relaxed fairways, this is the place for you.
Golfing in Cuba – less is more
There are currently only a few golf courses in Cuba – but they have all the more character for it. The best known is the Varadero Golf Club, located directly on the dream coast of the Hicacos Peninsula. The 18-hole course was designed by Canadian architect Les Furber and offers everything a golfer could wish for in the Caribbean: sea breezes, palm trees, strategically placed bunkers and impressive views of the Atlantic Ocean. The back nine, which stretches along the coastline, is particularly memorable.
The course is varied, fair to play, but not without challenges – ideal for all skill levels. The clubhouse is housed in an old Spanish villa and rounds off the golfing experience with colonial flair.
Golf holiday with a Caribbean extra
The combination of golf and Cuba is what makes it so appealing: after your round, you can end the day on the white sandy beach, explore Havana’s old town or enjoy a live concert with Cuban music and a mojito in your hand. Many hotels – especially in Varadero – offer golf packages and shuttle services to the golf course.
Particularly pleasant: the tropical climate allows for year-round golfing, with the best time to travel being from November to April.
Conclusion from a golfer’s perspective
If you’re looking for a relaxed golf trip away from the mainstream, Cuba is the place for you. The focus here is not on a large number of courses, but on the experience that surrounds them: culture, nature, cuisine and a feeling of ‘something completely different’. For golfers who love the mix of sport and authentic travel culture, Cuba is definitely worth a visit.
